Silicone Impression Material

In recent years, silicone dental impression materials have been widely used in the field of stomatology due to their excellent performance characteristics, and addition silicone dental silicone rubber has become a research hotspot in silicone dental impression materials.

Silicone rubber is a high-molecular synthetic rubber, which is an elastic and irreversible silicone impression material. Silicone rubber has many excellent physical and chemical properties as one of the most ideal dental impression materials at present and is widely used in the field of clinical restoration. As a silicone impression material, it mainly utilizes the characteristics of good elasticity, toughness, and strength. In addition, silicone impression material also has the advantages of good fluidity, plasticity, and small volume shrinkage. The impressions taken are highly accurate and chemically stable. They do not react with the model material and are easy to demold. Silicone impression material is an ideal type of impression material at present.

The material base polymer is vinyl polysiloxane (vinyl polysiloxane; VPS), so it is referred to as VPS material for short. Its crosslinking agent is hydrogen-containing silicone oil, and its catalyst is platinum salt or chloroplatinic acid. After the materials are mixed, the addition reaction occurs between the vinyl of vinyl polysiloxane and the silicon-hydrogen bond of hydrogen-containing silicone oil activated by the catalyst, and the reaction is fast and complete without any by-products. Therefore, the curing time of silicone dental VPS material is short, and it has excellent dimensional accuracy and dimensional stability after curing. At the same time, the main chain of the crosslinked network polymer is the high-energy silicon-oxygen bond, which has stable properties, and the grid structure can slide and orient when stressed, so the silicone dental material has better mechanical properties.

A silicone dental impression is an impression that records the morphology and relationship of oral tissues. The material used in making silicone dental impressions is called silicone dental impression material.

What is dental impression material made of? Common impression material classification

1. Alginate: The advantage is that it is cheap and easy to operate; the disadvantage is also obvious, the shrinkage is relatively large, and it cannot accurately reflect the shape of the tooth.

2. Agar: The advantage is that it is cheap, but the disadvantage is that it is easy to break and brittle.

3. Silicone rubber: Silicone impression material is classified into condensation room temperature vulcanization type and addition polymerization type according to the polymerization reaction type. Here refers to the addition-molded silicone rubber, which has the advantages of high accuracy and stability, and can be used for the production of various restorations. Mainly manifested in the following three aspects:

①The size is more stable after solidification, and the size change within 24 hours is stable at about 0.1%;

②The operation time is short, and it solidifies quickly in the oral cavity. The first impression is 3 minutes for solidification, and the second impression is 3 and a half minutes;

③The impression has high accuracy and good operation performance. In addition, the addition molding silicone impression material is a 1:1 mixture of rubber components with the same viscosity, which brings convenience to clinical work.

The ideal silicone dental impression material should have the following characteristics:

1. Good biological safety: it is harmless to the human body during short-term contact with oral tissues.

2. Good fluidity and plasticity: It can flow to all fine parts of the mold-taking area before solidification, and accurately reflect the fine structure of oral tissue.

3. Sufficient working time and suitable curing time.

4. Good compatibility with gypsum materials.

5. Good elasticity, mechanical strength and dimensional stability.

6. Disinfection can be carried out without reducing the impression quality to control cross-infection.

7. Comfortable taste, without special taste that makes patients uncomfortable.

8. Easy operation and reasonable price.

In summary, as an emerging impression material, silicone rubber has the following advantages compared with traditional impression materials: material strength and elasticity are higher than ordinary materials, superior fluidity, stable physical and chemical properties, high accuracy, and the impressions made can be stored for a long time. That means even if the injected model is damaged, the original impression can be used to refill the mold. This makes the use of silicone impression material more and more widely used and has a trend to replace other impression materials.
